\   AUTHOR: Marco Ocram SERIES: The Awful Truth, #2 GENRE: Crime Thriller Parody PUBLICATION DATE: June 4, 2019 RATING:  3.75 stars.  In a Nutshell: A spoof crime novel, the plot of which is nigh on impossible to explain in a line. Possibly the silliest book I have ever read! (I mean this as a compliment!) Enjoyed it to a great extent. Recommended, but only to those who read spoofs the way spoofs are meant to be read: by tossing out their thinking caps.  Plot Preview: (Honestly, I have no idea how to offer a preview to this crazy book! In a Nutshell: A high-fantasy novella about a Tree-like girl seeking revenge against a human. The first of a duology. Grand world-building, okay character development, amazing themes, slow pace, lyrical writing. This could have been a single novel instead of a pair of novellas. Plot Preview: Liu Lufeng is the eldest princess of the Feng, nature-loving and tree-resembling forest dwellers. Because of her grandmother’s insistence on her duty, Lufeng is the next bride of the human king. The bridewealth of their proposed wedding is the only way to ensure a future for Feng by stopping the unbridled human expansion into Feng land. Feng has already lost four family members to the king. AUTHOR: L. Ryan Storms GENRE: YA Romance/Fantasy. PUBLICATION DATE: April 15, 2025 RATING: 4.5 stars. In a Nutshell: A YA Romance with elements of magical realism. Well-written and loveable characters ( I hope you realise what a miracle this compliment is, coming from me for a YA novel ), fast pace, good plot, sweet romance without getting too mushy or cringey. I took it for the magical realism, but I ended up liking all of it. Much recommended. Plot Preview: Sixteen-year-old Penelope Jane, known to everyone as PJ, hates that she has to relive the most anxiety-inducing parts of her life. This is because she tends to slip nine minutes and fifty-three seconds into her past every time her panic level shoots up. Enjoyed the plot. The illustrations were unusual, I’ll give you that. A good story overall with a nice message. Plot Preview: Grandfather lives in a nice cottage in a small village. Whenever he needs to go to the market, he has to cross the nearby mountain. Unfortunately, “Misfortune Mountain”, as it is known locally, comes with a dreadful myth: anyone who falls while hiking over it has only 3 years left to live. The ‘book about books’ factor tempted me, but this turned out to be absolutely not my kind of read with its overdependence on tropes and needless spice and an abundance of clichés.. I should have listened to my friends’ warnings about this book. 😬 Outlier review yet again.
