Earth and Moonie - Andrés J. Colmenares - ★★★★

AUTHOR: Andrés J. Colmenares
GENRE: Children's Graphic Novel
PUBLICATION DATE: September 1, 2026
RATING: 4 stars.

In a Nutshell: A graphical story collection featuring some familiar cosmic entities in not-so-familiar roles. Nice stories with excellent messages. Recommended for children.

Andrés J. Colmenares is a Colombian illustrator popular for Wawawiwa comics featuring adorable anthropomorphised animals and natural objects. His comics are always suffused with warmth and heart, perfect to read on days we need to escape online hatred and poison.

This book isn't a comic strip collection like his other works but a collection of three stories featuring the titular Earth and Moonie in the lead. Unlike what you would expect, Earth and Moonie are siblings in this interpretation, and the Sun is their Mom. 😄

The three stories are titled ‘I don’t like being small’, ‘I don’t like being bored’, and ‘I don’t like being sick’, which pretty much tells us their main theme. While all three tales are good, I feel like the third one could have done with some extension at the end.

Despite their brevity, there is a lot of fun in each story. But even better than the plot itself is the message it offers. The moral in the second story was the most subtle, but to me, it was the best one as it is probably the most relevant to kids these days.

The illustrations are as cute and colourful as can be expected from this author-illustrator. Kids are sure to enjoy the various cosmic entities making an appearance in the cast.

Definitely recommended. This ought to be a great book for young readers aged 6-9 as it effectively combines humour, graphics and morals.

My thanks to Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing and Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers for providing the DRC of “Earth and Moonie” via NetGalley. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
