Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings - Disney Comics Group - ★★★.¾

SERIES: Disney Fairies Graphic Novel #15
GENRE: Children's Graphic Novel.
PUBLICATION DATE: July 22, 2014.
RATING: 3.75 stars.
꧁ Fifteenth graphic novel of the Disney Fairies series ꧂
❁ The graphic novel version of the movie, “Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings” (SOTW).
❁ Contains only four stories. The entire book is the novelisation of the movie, with no bonus content.
❁ As such, the stories are on the longer side, and continue from each other. It’s like reading one big story instead of four small ones.
❁ SOTW is my second-favourite Tinker Bell movie, so I obviously was a little biased towards this book. However, this is the rare case when the book doesn’t match up to the movie. SOTW has plenty of excellent animated scenes, such as the fairies frosting the pixie dust tree and the sparkly magical bond between Tink’s and Peri’s wings. These scenes feel very diluted in the book as their essence is in the animation.
❁ The text is easy to understand, perfect for the target age group of 6-10 year olds.
❁ The illustrations are also great, with characters resembling their movie appearance. But compared to the movie, they do pale a little. This book made me happy that the movie version of Queen Clarion is used in these later graphic novels. I can’t imagine that horrendous bubblegum-pink version of Queen Clarion from the initial graphic novels standing next to the impressive Lord Milori.
❁ My buddy reader continued to accompany me as she also loves the Tinker Bell movies. However, she has specifically asked me to complain about the fact that Rosetta (my little one’s favourite) didn’t get any key scenes in this book. She was particularly disappointed at the interaction between Rosetta and Sled being cut from this book. (What can I say? She’s a tough customer!)
❁ No story-wise ratings this time as all the four “stories” (The Secret of the Wings, Into the Woods, Reunited, The Big Freeze) are essentially a single story.
Overall, this is not at all a bad book, and the story is anyway among the best of the Tinker Bell tales. But it doesn’t stand a chance in comparison to the movie as this story is more about the magic than about conversations and hence works better with animation. Still, a good option for Tinker Bell fans.
3.75 stars. (The movie is a 5 star watch!)
Just one more book to go in the combo volume. Will it match up to the earlier books or be a lone dud? Stay tuned!
