Yet another anthology from Kindle Unlimited. This one is not an easy read. All the stories have proper endings, but not all have happy endings. The topics deal with brutal realities, so the stories aren't comfortable or light. They can leave a scar on your mind and pain in your heart.

"Woman" is a very short book, just 69 pages long. It has five stories, named after each letter of the word WOMAN. But within these few pages lie topics so intense!

W talks about genital mutilation and its detrimental effects on the physique and psyche of a woman.

O deals with breast ironing to avoid attracting the male eyes. This story shocked me the most because I hadn't heard of breast ironing ever before.

M is about a rape survivor and her mental trauma.

A reveals a woman's standing up to marital bullying.

N narrates a prostitute's attempt to gain freedom for her younger sister who has also been ensnared in the flesh trade.


Each chapter in the book begins with a quote from that particular letter and those five quotes are also wisely chosen.

All the stories are equally impactful and can leave you stunned as well as horrified. Honestly speaking, I was quite surprised to find out that the author is a man. I didn't expect such sensitive writing about women to be attempted by a male writer. He has touched a chord by narrating the problems faced by the female gender.

I'd definitely recommend this book to all but pick it up when you are mentally in a strong place.

The characters in the book you are reading have a life of their own, beyond what is written for their characters. And they do what they want to every time you close the book, only to be pulled back in their roles when you reopen the book. Unbelievable, right? Interesting characters, great plotline, some cool magic. A bit confusing in some segments and some unanswered questions. Overall though, it kept me hooked. Recommended. In a Nutshell: A graphic novel that narrates stories from the Bible, using Cleopas’s encounter with Jesus on the way to Emmaus as the foundation. Innovative in concept and execution. Excellent (and racially-authentic) illustrations. Might be a bit tricky for the target audience of middle-graders as the narrative isn't linear. But adult supervision will help. Recommended. Children are always attracted to books with illustrations. So using a graphic novel to teach them stories from the Bible is a wonderful idea. But this book doesn’t just stop at this basic intent. Rather, its presentation sets it apart from other similar works. The story uses Cleopas’s trip from Jerusalem to Emmaus as the setting. In a Nutshell: A short psychological drama about a woman on death row. Unreliable narrator, but not in the way you would expect. A fast read, but shouldn’t be read too fast lest you miss the clues.
