Not All Dragons Breathe Fire - Naomi Lastrucci

AUTHOR: Naomi Lastrucci

GENRE: Fantasy, Short Story
RATING: 4.5 stars.

In a Nutshell: Loved this adorable short story. Its having a dragon as the main character was a contributing factor, but not the only reason for my enjoyment.

Fintan the young dragon is troubled, as his dad is very disappointed in him. Regardless of dad’s numerous dragon-training lessons, Fintan can’t breathe fire, nor has he kidnapped a human. Such a shame to the family business! To prove his father wrong, Fintan flies off to the nearby forest, where he coincidentally stumbles into a runaway bride, a princess at that! To his surprise, Princess Brianna begs him to kidnap her! Fintan finally has his golden opportunity, but will his deception convince his father? Will this fake kidnapping solve his problems?

I simply loved this little story. It is, at its heart, a straightforward tale about communication (or the lack thereof), parental expectations, and friendship. Every scene is written with these three factors in mind. There is no frivolous rambling, nor any needless subplots or pretentious prose. The writing is simple yet pleasing. The characters are fun!

When you have a few minutes to spare, please try this indie fantasy story. It is YA in its style but will work for adults and teens too.

You can get this story for free at the author’s website when you subscribe to her newsletter. I am eager to read more of her works after sampling this one.

Can we ever have too much of dragons? No indeed!
