Little White Fish and the Strange Thing - Guido Van Genechten

Author: Guido Van Genechten

Genre: Picture book.
Rating: 4.25 stars.

A cute little story for the cutest and littlest of readers – toddlers.

One morning, Little White Fish discovers something strange. Along with his friends from the ocean, he tries to figure out what that object could be. The creatures use the five sensory techniques of touch, sound, sight, taste and smell. Finally, they realise that though they don’t know what that object is, it certainly makes for a wonderful playhouse.

This board book is perfect for its target age group of readers aged 2-4. There are a variety of creatures for kids to discover through these pages. The sentences are very simple and easy on the ears. There is a series of fun interactive puzzles at the end of the book. The perfect addition to this cute story.

This book will work beautifully as a bedtime read as well as for a general storytelling session. The sensory activities of the creatures can be replicated by guardians reading the story aloud to their little ones, and getting the little ones to do them too, thereby increasing the fun.

I did wonder why “Little White Fish” was just called that while the other creatures were referred to more accurately as Seahorse, Turtle, Shrimp, and so on. Then again, Little White Fish really pops out of the darkish underwater sketches with his bright white circular body.

The illustrations are really cute and demonstrate well each of the five senses through the animals’ explorations.

All in all, a really sweet and stimulating book for toddlers.

My thanks to Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for the DRC of “Little White Fish and the Strange Thing”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
