Astrophysics for People in a Hurry - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Author: Neil deGrasse Tyson

Genre: Nonfiction, Science.
Rating: 3.75 stars.

Hmmm… So I still like Neil DeGrasse Tyson, but I STILL consider Carl Sagan the best author if you want to read this genre. (Or maybe, this isn’t NDGT’s best work.) It is informative without any doubt, and it imbibes NDGT’s humorous and approachable personality well within its words. But something was missing.

There are certain parts I found absolutely gripping, such as his content on elements of the periodic table and their essential features, the details on the light spectrum and the breakup of various waves seen and unseen in nature. But the rest of the content generated a feeling of dΓ©jΓ  vu as it was a repetition of what is already covered in “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking and “Cosmos” and “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space”, both by Carl Sagan.

As NDGT states in the introductory note, the book aims at providing a “foundational fluency” in astrophysics. It certainly succeeds in that. But you must understand that this is Astrophysics 101, not Science 101. There’s a lot of “foundational fluency” that you already need to have in physics and astronomy before you pick this up. In other words, keep in mind that the title is not “Astrophysics for Beginners” but “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry”.

The book is more layman-friendly than Stephen Hawking’s (obviously!), but if you are not among those in a hurry, I’d recommend Carl Sagan’s works to you. They are more elaborate and at the same time, cater to a wider segment of the reading audience. This one is only for those who are comfortable with the technical basics of science and mainly want to know more about astrophysics.

3.75 stars from me. (I have a sneaky suspicion that this might have been a tad lower had I not loved NDGT so much. πŸ˜‰)
