What Bug Am I? - Skye Wade - ★★★★★
AUTHOR: Skye Wade
ILLUSTRATOR: Anna Snowlet
SERIES: Bug Books For Children, #1
GENRE: Children's Picture Book.
PUBLICATION DATE: January 1, 2022
RATING: 5 stars.
An outstanding book for youngsters! It’s the perfect combination of learning and fun.
The book is structured around a Little Bug who doesn’t seem to know who he is. When he encounters a Ladybug and explains his predicament, Ladybug decides to help him out. They approach various insects around them, searching a clue that would help identify who Little Bug is.
This story is presented on every alternate page. In between, there is informative content about actual photos of the bug they just approached, along with some interesting trivia about it. Thus you have the story on a page, the trivia on the next page, then a page where the story continues with a new bug, next comes trivia about this bug, and so on.
I loved the structure on the trivia page. The information is so neatly organised. I especially liked the section that looks like a row of buttons with simple tags of ‘Run’, ‘Walk’, ‘Crawl’, ‘Fly’, and so on. Whatever is applicable to that particular insect is highlighted and the other buttons are greyed out. It’s a simple yet impactful visual aid to convey information on the insect’s movements. The photos of the insects are superb in their clarity and detail.
The story section is also amazing. There are some tough words such as ‘midges’ and ‘aphids’, but overall, the content is quite manageable for a child as most of it is explained elaborately. The illustrations are simply adorable. They are so rich and vibrant, with the colours popping out from every corner.
This book will be a fun way of teaching children (and even adults) about insects. With the perfect balance of fiction and facts, it makes the encyclopaedic content very appealing to its little readers. Definitely recommended to schools and libraries, and also to little bug lovers at home. This is one bug book guaranteed not to make you go “Ewwww!” (Well, for most of the pages anyway. 😉)
5 creepy-crawly stars.
