Luke and Lottie and Their Vegetable Garden - Ruth Wielockx - ★★★★.½

AUTHOR: Ruth Wielockx
GENRE: Children's Picture Book
PUBLICATION DATE: March 22, 2022
RATING: 4.5 stars.

What an adorable book this is!

As the title clearly states, Luke and Lottie have decided to begin their own vegetable garden under the guidance of their dad. The book details out the steps they go through, right from purchasing the saplings/seeds to planting them, watering them, and then the most important ingredient of all – having patience to wait for them to grow.

The book delivers on various levels:
👉 It provides age-appropriate information about how different plants grow in different ways and how planting needs to be done the right way.

👉 It is very practical in its approach and ensures that its little readers grasp all concepts easily. For instance, it shows how seed packet labels can be stuck on a stick next to where those seeds were sown. An easy way of remembering what you planted in that spot. Such a simple yet brilliant idea!

👉 It shows kids who listen to their dad when he advises them on the right way to doing things. At the same time, it also shows parents who listen to their children and respond to their queries fairly without judgement. (And it also has a little boy who decides to buy flowers for his mom while he is at the garden shop – how sweet is he!)

👉 It has its moments of fun in addition to the educational value.

👉 It emphasises on the importance of patience while waiting for results. In an instant gratification world, this is a much-required lesson.

👉 It has adorable illustrations. I loved those round faces and endearing expressions. The illustrations are perfect complements to the story.

The only thing I felt the book could have added is a little bit of info on the kind of soil required. It only states “dirt” for the vegetable garden, but obviously, any and every dirt doesn’t work. Maybe that could have been the first step before the kids went to the garden shop to buy seeds.

The language level is perfect for any little reader aged 3+. Definitely recommended for any aspiring gardener.

My thanks to Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for the DRC of “Luke and Lottie and Their Vegetable Garden”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
